AAA Offers Summer Travel Tips

Even though the busy Fourth of July holiday travel weekend is past, there is still plenty of time to take that summer road trip.

With that in mind, AAA is offering a number of tips for those getting ready to still hit the highways over the coming weeks.

AAA said that Americans drive the most during the summer months.

Spokesperson Montrae Waiters said it is important to check vehicles before taking that trip.

“Nothing ruins a summer trip quicker than flat tires, your engine overheating, or a dead battery because it is so hot outside,” said Waiters.

She went on to say that more than half of the calls AAA gets from stranded motorists are for a couple of different topics.

“The most common calls AAA receives for stranded motorists is flat tires, low fuel, lock outs, as well as dead batteries,” said Waiters.

Waiters added that checking a number of different things can make that summer road trip go a lot smoother.

“Make sure you check your tires,” said Waiters. “Check your coolant level. Check your battery.”

Meanwhile, Waiters also recommended that drivers check the level and condition of engine oil and check belts and hoses.

Also, AAA recommended that drivers carry an emergency kit in their car with a flashlight, extra batteries, flares, jumper cables, a first-aid kit, and extra water.

The agency said people should also not let the gas level get below one-quarter of a tank, use high beams at night when driving on unlit roadways whenever possible, select a route of travel ahead of time, reserve all accommodations in advance, and lock cars when leaving them.
