Amnesty Day a Success

Organizers say that last month’s trash Amnesty Day in Stephens County was very successful.

Amnesty Day in Stephens County took place on Saturday, September 26.

It gave Stephens County residents the chance to unload large household trash like mattresses, metal products, couches, and electronics for no charge.

Keep Toccoa-Stephens County Beautiful Executive Director Linda Scofield said they collected more trash at last month’s Amnesty Day by far than was collected at the first Amnesty Day in April.

According to Scofield, they collected 60.4 tons of junk and metal.

“That is 20.6 more tons than the Amnesty Day held in April,” she said.

This Amnesty Day was also held at a new location.

Scofield said moving it to the Stephens County Road Department on Scenic Drive made everything go much more smoothly.

“It was so much larger,” said Scofield. “It was easier to get in, easier to get out.”

Scofield went on to say that Amnesty Days like the ones held this year go a long way towards helping to clean up Stephens County.

“They (residents) recognize the economic value of making this place a better place to live and play,” said Scofield. “It encourages people to come and businesses to come when things are cleaned up and looking great.”

Scofield said she appreciates county commissioners and staff for their support and their efforts towards making Amnesty Day happen and making it a success.

“Both Phyllis Ayers and Stanley London stood alongside with the crew and worked all day long, unloading trucks and tractor trailers,” said Scofield. “I tip my hat to Phyllis Ayers and Stephens County Commissioners. They really stepped up for Keep Toccoa-Stephens County Beautiful.”
