Banks County Deputy Shot

Authorities are still searching for a man that shot a Sheriff’s Deputy in Banks County yesterday afternoon.

According to Sergeant Carissa McFaddin with the Banks County Sheriffs Office at around 4:12 P.M. Wednesday afternoon Banks County deputies responded to a report of an armed robbery in progress at the Atlanta Dragway. While deputies were en route to the scene, the suspect attempted to kidnap the victim, but fled the scene after stealing the victim’s vehicle. Banks County Deputies located the vehicle in the area of Tanger Outlet Center where a traffic stop was attempted from which the suspect attempted to flee. A short time later, the driver exited the vehicle and fired at a deputy. The deputy was shot while still in the patrol unit. While the suspect fled on foot, he continued to shoot towards the deputy’s patrol unit.

The suspect is believed to be armed with two weapons. He is described as a black male in his 40’s with short hair, approximately 6’0”/170 lbs, wearing dark clothing.

Last night’s search for the suspect was mainly in the area of Steve Reynolds Boulevard in Banks County. Authorities now believe the suspect may have fled to the Atlanta area. The GBI Forensic Artist has completed a sketch of the man wanted. (See above) Agencies from throughout Northeast Georgia are participating in the search for the suspect.

The Banks County Deputy (who was reportedly wearing a bulletproof vest) was transported to the hospital and treated for non life-threatening injuries.

We will have more details as they become available on WNEG.
