BBB Offers Tips For Dealing With Data Breach

The Better Business Bureau is offering suggestions for consumers concerned that their credit or debit cards may have been compromised by a retail or online data breach.

First, the Better Business Bureau said people need to stay calm as consumers are not liable for fraudulent charges on stolen account numbers.

Second, the agency said to check with the website of the retailer for the latest information by typing the store name directly into your browser.

The Better Business Bureau said if your card was compromised, you will likely hear from the bank or card-issuer first.

Officials with the agency also said people should consider putting an alert or freeze on your credit report with the three major credit reporting agencies if the card was compromised. A credit freeze will prevent anyone from accessing your credit report or scores. You can still apply for credit by temporarily lifting the freeze.

People should also contact law enforcement and monitor account or credit card statements regularly and closely to look for any fraudulent charges, notifying the bank or credit card agencies immediately if one is found.
