Bell, Clock Working At Top of Historic Stephens Co. Courthouse

Area residents may notice a new sound coming from the historic Stephens County Courthouse.

Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers said that after about a year long saga, the clock on the top of the historic Stephens County Courthouse in downtown Toccoa is working and the bell is ringing.

Ayers said that the county is pleased to have that fixed and operating properly.

“It is a nice sound,” said Ayers. “We did not announce it. You would be surprised at the people that said, ‘Wow, has that been ringing all this time?’ We are excited about that.”

Ayers said that the county is also having the dome on the historic courthouse painted.

She said that project should be finished this week.
