Camp Toccoa’s D-Day Celebration starts today

The Camp Toccoa at Currahee Board is hosting a D-Day Celebration today and tomorrow.

Starting today at 5:30 p.m., there will be a reception and cash bar with a banquet to follow at 7. Entertainment will be provided by Big Teach.

During the banquet, Colonel Joe Alexander will be speaking. Alexander is the past president of the 101st Association and trustee of Camp Toccoa at Currahee.

Then, on Saturday, the Currahee Mountain 10K walk/run will begin at 8 a.m.

Registration is at 7, followed by the race at 8 and a dedication of Archway and Pavilion at 10 a.m. The afternoon will include a battle re-enactment at 2 p.m. and military encampment, displays, food and music from 2-4.

Chairman of Camp Toccoa Gary Bellamy explained the importance of this event.

“We’re trying to maintain that legacy of those guys that trained here back in WWII that made such a tremendous contribution to the world as well as maintain that important history of our city at the same time,” said Bellamy.

According to Bellamy, the proceeds from ticket sales will help fund four barracks that they are planning to build.

“We want to build four, we have original building materials on the outside that we’ll be using to look just like the barracks did in WWII,” said Bellamy. “We’re going to use that money to help fund that project.”
