City of Toccoa Unveils Historic Plaque

dds-plaqueMain Street Toccoa starts up a new series of historic plaque dedications in the downtown area.

Last Thursday, the first historic plaque in the 2016-2017 series was unveiled at the Department of Driver Services building on Doyle Street in downtown Toccoa.

City officials said the building was originally constructed in 1900 and may best be known for its vast, open windows and as the location for the Martha Park Dress Shop.

According to city officials, the dress shop catered to local residents in the area of women’s fashion throughout the latter half of the 20th Century.

Today, the building is owned by Arom Solutions, Inc. and is home to the DDS offices.

The historic plaque program highlights 10 historic buildings in downtown Toccoa each year, with the city unveiling and dedicating one plaque per month.

City officials said once all plaques have been installed, they will be added to Main Street Toccoa’s Historic Walking Tour Guide.
