Cornelia K-mart to Close

A national retailer will close its Habersham County location by the end of March.

Sears Holdings announced last week that it was closing 150 Kmart and Sears stores across the country.

One of those is the Kmart in Cornelia, located at 365 Habersham Village Circle.

Officials with Sears Holdings called the decision to close stores a difficult but necessary step as they take actions to strengthen the company’s operations and fund its transformation.

According to Sears Holdings, many of the stores targeted for closure have struggled with their financial performance for years and the company has kept them open to maintain local jobs and in the hopes that they would turn around.

However, Sears Holdings said that in order to meet its objective of returning to profitability, the company has to make tough decisions and will continue to do so, which will give its better performing stores a chance at success.

The company said eligible associates impacted by these store closures will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at other area Kmart or Sears stores.
