County Commission Abandons New Road

During their meeting Tuesday, the Stephens County Commission approved a motion to abandon county maintenance of New Road in the City of Avalon. The abandonment is conditional upon the city’s agreement to take over maintenance due to safety issues.

County officials say the decision to abandon the road is because it serves no substantial public purpose and because its removal from the county road system is in the best public interest.

During a public hearing about the road, George Dean, a resident on New Road, addressed the commission with his concerns. He said that the biggest issue is traffic control.

“Maybe we could do some traffic control,” said Dean. “It’s terrible, no lines on the road. Nothing. The traffic has probably quadrupled in the last two months and every weekend, it’s worse.”

If the City of Avalon refuses to accept the resolution, the commission will readdress the issue.
