D-Day Run Set for Saturday

Saturday is the anniversary of D-Day and the Camp Toccoa at Currahee Project is marking the day with an annual event.

It’s the 4th annual D-Day run at Currahee.

The run takes place at the Camp Toccoa site at Currahee Mountain, off of Dick’s Hill Parkway, as runners will trace the steps of the paratroopers who trained at the camp, going three miles up and three miles down.

Registration for the run starts at 7 a.m. and the run begins at 8 a.m.

It costs $35 to register and people can sign up Saturday morning.

However, Stephens County Historical Society Executive Director Brenda Carlan said there will be lots of other activities going on throughout the day.

“About 10 a.m., we are doing something really different,” said Carlan. “They said they will have about 75 to 100 Patriot Guard riders on motorcycles. They are going to escort our World War II veterans from the museum to the campsite for the program.”

According to Carlan, there will also be a replica of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on display as well.

Carlan said that the actual program will then start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.

She went on to say that there will be things for people to look at throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“This year, we have asked groups to come in, like the VFW, American Legion, DAR,” said Carlan. “We have asked them to come in and set up tables.”

There will also be the “Jake and Jack Track” obstacle course for children to participate in.

Carlan said everyone is invited Saturday to see what is going on out at Camp Toccoa.

“In addition to the program, we are also going to have a groundbreaking for the new pavilion that we are building up here,” said Carlan.

All proceeds from the run benefit the Camp Toccoa at Currahee Project.
