Doyle St. Pool Project Earns Award for City of Toccoa

A national organization’s state chapter is praising a city of Toccoa project.

Recently, the Georgia Chapter of the American Public Works Association presented the city of Toccoa with an award for the Doyle Street pool project.

Toccoa Mayor Terry Carter said that City Manager Billy Morse, Commissioner Gail Fry, and Community Development Director Connie Tabor received the award last week during an event at St. Simons Island.

“The city of Toccoa was chosen as the Project of the Year for our Doyle Street swimming pool,” said Carter. “It is a very nice award. I would like to thank everybody that participated in that.”

The city of Toccoa swimming pool had closed in 2012 after serving the public since the mid-1940s.

In November 2013, the city commission set the goal to re-do the pool complex.

The pool building was constructed to replicate the original building that was situated at the Doyle Street location in the mid-1940s.

Toccoa’s Public Works Department performed the demolition of the existing pool, shower house, and decking around the pool.

The Doyle Street Pool re-opened to the public in August 2014.

This was the American Public Works Association’s first Georgia Chapter Awards program designed to highlight excellence in the field of public works in Georgia and recognize outstanding public works employees, individuals, groups, and projects.

The Awards Committee received over 50 submittals for the awards program in three different categories and 25 applicants were selected to receive a state-level award.
