Early Voting Ends Today

Today is the last day for early voting for the E-SPLOST special election in Stephens County.

Stephens County Registrar Bill Cochran said that polls will be open all day today at the Stephens County Registrar’s Office in the Courthouse Annex on Tugalo Street in downtown Toccoa from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We have had light turnout,” said Cochran. “There have been 578 people who have come up and cast their votes at the Registrar’s Office. We have had 41 mail-in absentee ballots that have come in.”

Those numbers were as of Thursday afternoon.

Voters will need a photo ID.

Cochran said those who do not vote today will have to wait until Election Day on Tuesday to vote.

“There is no voting on Monday,” said Cochran.

Voting on Tuesday will be at the Stephens County Senior Center on Rose Lane in Toccoa from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Also, Cochran said anyone with a mail-in, paper absentee ballot must return it by 7 p.m. Tuesday to the Registrar’s Office.

Stephens County voters are casting ballots on whether or not to continue the one-cent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for Education for another five years.

According to Stephens County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey, the revenues generated from the renewal of the E-SPLOST would go towards maintenance and technology needs throughout the system, as well as CTAE renovations at the high school.

Dorsey went on to say that this would not be a new tax, but a continuation of the one penny that is already being collected.
