No charges are expected to be filed against an Elbert County man involved in a wreck Tuesday morning near Royston.

It happened about 8:40 Tuesday morning on SR17.

“A black Jeep was traveling south on Georgia 17 near Cedar Lane Drive. The Jeep crossed the center line and struck an 18-wheeler in the rear tires. The driver was seriously injured and taken to Athens Regional Medical Center where he is being treated,” said Georgia State Patrol Hartwell Post Assistant Commander Sgt Matt Baxley, who worked the accident.

The driver of the Jeep is identified as 72-year old Harold Vaughn of Elberton. Rescuers had to use the jaws of life to extracate Vaughn from his vehicle.

Baxley said the driver of the 18-wheeler was able to safely pull his rig over to the side of the road and was not injured.

According to Baxley, Vaughn was not driving impaired but appeared to have had some kind of medical event and will not face any charges.

Vaughn remains in Athens Regional Medical Center where his condition is not known.
