Former Commissioner Chitwood Passes Away

Funeral services are set for a former Stephens County Commissioner.

Steve Roger Chitwood passed away on Saturday at the age of 86 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Chitwood served as a Stephens County Commissioner for four years, having been elected in 2002 and serving through 2006.

He also served on the Stephens County Development Authority, Stephens County Chamber of Commerce, was Senior of the Year in 2002, and also received recognition previously for his service with the Georgia Moutains R.D.C.

Also, Chitwood was a United States Air Force Korean War Veteran and was a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion.

He retired from The Citizens Bank of Toccoa with 22 years of service and was a former member of the Civitan Club, Toccoa Lions Club, Stephens County Historical Society, and the Toccoa Orchestra Guild.

Services for Chitwood will take place Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary with burial to follow at Stephens Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the United States Air Force.
