Franklin Co. Conducting Death Investigation

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are conducting an investigation involving murder and aggravated assault.

Law Enforcement in Franklin County say they received a call around 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning, August 28, regarding a welfare check at a residence on Grady School Road.

Officers say they arrived at the residence and discovered a white male identified as John Robert Dye, 40, of Canon, with serious injuries.

Dye was transported by life flight to a local area hospital.

Meanwhile, authorities say that law enforcement then discovered a deceased female within the residence.

The female is identified as Cynthia R. McCollough, 61 of Canon, Georgia.

McCollough is Dye’s mother.

Investigators say they conducted interviews and executed multiple search warrants throughout the day of Thursday and early Friday morning.

Dye had recently moved to Franklin County, Georgia where he resided with his mother at the Grady School Road address.

According to authorities, Dye is from the Elberton, Georgia area, though investigators learned that Dye lived in the Hart, Franklin, Elbert and Clarke County areas during the past ten years.

Dye has a lengthy criminal history in the residing counties and is currently on state probation.

An autopsy was set for Friday at the state crime lab to determine the cause of death.

Dye had not been formally charged with any crimes as of Friday, but is being monitored by a law enforcement officer while his stay at a local hospital.
