Hartwell Lake Clean-Up Set for Next Month

Spring cleaning on and around Hartwell Lake kicks off with the Lake Hartwell Clean-up, Green-up environmental restoration effort next month.

This year’s Hartwell Lake clean-up is set for April 15 through April 22.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Lake Hartwell Association, a non-profit organization that promotes cooperation, assistance and information exchange among those concerned with Hartwell Lake, facilitate the week-long campaign in association with Earth Day.

Organizers said volunteers are needed from scout groups, civic clubs, local residents, businesses, home owners associations, and families and friends of the lake to pick up litter and other non-natural debris as part of the clean-up.

This year’s event will culminate with the Volunteer Appreciation Picnic on Earth Day, April 22, at Big Oaks Recreation Area in Hartwell, Georgia. The annual picnic includes food and prizes and is the organizers’ way of showing gratitude to volunteers for their hard work.

Herb Burnham, executive director of the Lake Hartwell Association, said his team looks forward to working with the Corps again to clean up the islands and shoreline of Hartwell Lake.

Meanwhile, organizers said they also hope to transform the one week event into a long term Adopt-A-Park-type program where available volunteers assist throughout the year.
