Henry Speaks on Umpiring at LLWS

Quite a thrill.

That’s how local Little League umpire Brian Henry described his experience umpiring at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania last month.

Henry spoke about his experience last week on “Crunchtime” on WNEG.

He said there is nothing like walking out on the field for the Little League World Series.

“When you walk out on that field for the first time, you look around and you know you have seen it so many times over,” said Henry. “It was incredible.”

Henry was one of 16 umpires to work the Little League World Series.

He said they really worked well together in unique circumstances, at least for Little League umpires.

“Each particular game had a six-man crew on it, so that was something you do not see often at the Little League level because on a 60-foot field, that is a lot of folks out there,” said Henry. “Everything seemed to go very well. We had 14 guys from the U.S., 1 from Puerto Rico, and 1 from Canada. Everyone had great dynamics and got along extremely well. We really had a great time.”

Henry worked both the first game of the tournament and also got to umpire the Little League World Series Championship game.

In both games, he was the home plate umpire.

He said that was something he was not necessarily expecting to do.

“It was kind of unusual to have a person who calls the first game and then gets to call the last game,” said Henry. “Very fortunate to be able to have accomplished that. The thrill of a lifetime.”

Henry, a volunteer umpire for the Toccoa Little League with 20 years of experience, is also a Georgia Little League Umpire consultant and works for the Southeastern Region Umpire Staff.
