Historic Plaque to be Unveiled in Toccoa Today

Main Street Toccoa will be unveiling another historic plaque on a building downtown today.

The dedication and unveiling at 80 East Doyle Street takes place this afternoon at 5 p.m.

Main Street spokesman Christian Hamilton told WNEG that the building originally housed the Barron and Lawrence 5 and 10-cent store.

The building was constructed in 1906, one year before the County’s historic courthouse was constructed.

In the 1990’s, the location was home to Powell’s Jewelry store and was most recently occupied by Just Sew Pretty, an online boutique dedicated to embroidery and more.

Today’s plaque unveiling marks the 10th plaque highlighting historic buildings in Toccoa.

More plaques are planned on buildings in the coming months, according to Hamilton.

Once all of the plaques have been installed, they will be added to Main Street Toccoa’s Historic Walking Tour Guide.

Again, today’s plaque unveiling takes place at 5 p.m. today at 80 E. Doyle St. and the public is invited.
