Historic Plaques Installed At City Golf Course

The city of Toccoa installs three special historic plaques at the Links at Toccoa to honor Camp Toccoa.

City officials installed the plaques shortly before the D-Day Banquet on June 3, held at the Links golf course.

According to the city of Toccoa, the first plaque honors the history of the Camp Toccoa building located at the Links itself.

Meanwhile, the second plaque honors the 48-star flag found at Camp Toccoa that flew through two world wars, eight presidents, and the emergence of America as a world superpower.

Finally, the third plaque honors a Camp Toccoa slate pool table generously donated by the Elliott Caudell family that served as entertainment for the soldiers before their eventual deployment overseas.

Officials with the city say that these historic plaques celebrate the rich history of Toccoa and serve as a reminder that Toccoa played a vital role in the defense of America during World War II because of Camp Toccoa, which housed several divisions of the U.S. Paratrooper division.

These plaques at the Links were installed as part of Main Street Toccoa’s historic plaque program, which recognizes a host of historic buildings yearly.
