Humane Shelter overpopulated and in need of foster homes or adoptions

The Toccoa-Stephens County Humane Shelter is currently overloaded with animals, specifically cats.

Executive Director Jeff Roberts said they have over 200 animals, with over 130 of them being cats and they need help from the public.

“We need the help because every cage we have is full so we need people to either help with adopting or really need some foster homes to take some of the moms and kittens until they get a little bigger,” said Roberts.

Roberts said many of the cats they have are too young to adopt, but some are old enough for pre-adoption. Pre-adoption allows the owner to take the kitten when it’s old enough and the shelter gets them spayed or neutered.

According to Roberts, Stephens County is dealing with a pet overpopulation issue and says how it can be solved.

“The main way that it can be solved is getting animals spayed and neutered so we don’t have as many unwanted animals born,” said Roberts. “We do have a low cost program in place to do that. All our animals are spayed and neutered before they go home and we do have a $20 grant funded spay-neuter program that we can get other animals spayed and neutered that people have so we can prevent having litters of kittens.”

The shelter still accepts any animal that’s brought to them by a county resident, so they need more cage space to be available.
