Indian Football Faces Franklin Co. To Start Season Tonight

Stephens County will open the 2015 football season later tonight at home.

The Indians will play Franklin County at the Reservation this evening in the season opener for both teams.

Stephens County is coming off of an 8-4 season last year in which it made the second round of the AAAA state football playoffs.

Meanwhile, Franklin County finished last season 4-7 and lost in the first round of the AAA state football playoffs.

Indians’ Defensive Coordinator Rob Stowe said they feel Franklin County is a much improved team.

“They are very big up front,” said Stowe. “I do not know what their weights are exactly but I feel like they average 275-280 across the front. They are going to come off and strike you. Their quarterback, Tyrique David, is a very good player, great athlete. We saw him throw a couple of times on film against Commerce off his back foot 60 yards in the air. You combine that with a kid that can run 4.6, you have problems.”

Stowe said the Indian defense will have to play assignment football and play hard.

“This is one of the best defenses I have seen as far as running to the football, trying to get there and tackle,” said Stowe. “We just have to do a better job of getting to the ball correctly, then tackle the guy and get him on the ground.”

Kick-off tonight from the Reservation is set for 7:30 p.m.

Air time on AM 630 WNEG is set for 5:30 p.m. today as we get started with the Indian Tailgate Show.

Coach’s Corner starts at 7 p.m. and pre-game coverage from the Reservation starts at 7:15 p.m.
