Indians Travel to Elbert Co. Tonight

Stephens County looks to start the 2015 football season 2-0.

The Indians head on the road for the first of three straight road games tonight as they visit Elbert County in the Granite Bowl.

Stephens County is coming off a 34-7 season-opening win last Friday at home against Franklin County.

Stephens County Offensive Coordinator Roger Gentry said the Indians had a good week of practice as they look to improve from last week’s game.

“We have to get rid of some things, some penalties,” said Gentry. “We went back this week, broke down our film, went to practice and worked on four or five things we thought we could get better at.”

Meanwhile, Elbert County is also off to a strong start this year after beating Cedar Shoals last week.

This game features two of the top high school football players in the state as Stephens County offensive tackle Ben Cleveland and Elbert County quarterback Mecole Hardman will be on the same field.

Last year, Hardman ran for more than 100 yards and both ran for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass as the Blue Devils held off the Indians, 35-33, at the Reservation.

“The guy can run,” said Gentry. “He is something else.”

Kick-off from the Granite Bowl is set for 7:30 p.m.

Coverage on AM 630 WNEG begins at 6:30 p.m. with the Indian Road Show. Coach’s Corner starts at 7 p.m. and pre-game coverage from Elberton starts at 7:15 p.m.
