Lady Indians Advance in Softball Tourney

Stephens County is onto Columbus as one of the eight teams still with a chance at a AAAA state softball title.

The Lady Indians swept Mary Persons in two games on the road Wednesday to stamp a ticket to the state championship tournament.

In the first game, the Lady Indians beat Mary Persons, 6-1.

They were led in the circle by Emma Whitfield as she went the distance, allowing 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 8.

Whitfield also had a two-run homerun at the plate in the first game, while Karly Smith went 3 for 4 with a run scored and 2 RBIs and Ashton Ayers was also 3 for 4 with two runs scored.

Moving to the second game, the Lady Indians went extra innings and won 6-5, in 8 innings.

Peyton Terrell, who went 2 for 4 with a run scored, had the big hit wiith a walk-off single.

Whitfield, who was the winning pitcher in the second game too, drove in the tying run with a double with two outs to send the second game to extra innings.

Also at the plate, Raina Mayfield went 2 for 2 with 2 RBI’s and Natalie Morgan was 2 for 4 with a homerun, an RBI, and a run scored.

The state double-elimination eight-team tournament begins next Thursday in Columbus.

Stephens County is not the only Region 8-AAAA team to make the tournament.

Oconee County has also advanced to the final eight, while Jefferson plays a deciding game today against West Laurens to try and make it three Region 8-AAAA teams in Columbus.
