The City of Lavonia had its first reading of the Fiscal Year 2017 budget this week.

The Lavonia City Council held that first reading at its meeting on Monday.

During that reading, Lavonia City Manager Charles Cawthon gave the council the details of the budget.

Cawthon said it is a total of $5,809,138, which he says is down a little bit from Fiscal Year 2016.

According to Cawthon, this proposed budget includes a few cuts in some areas, but expansions in other areas.

He said the budget tries to maintain the council’s priorities in an effective manner, while being a good steward of the funds entrusted to the city.

The budget will get a second hearing in December and at that time the Lavonia City Council can give final approval for the budget.

Also on Monday, the Lavonia City Council voted to approve the 2017 agreement with the Downtown Development Authority.
