Literacy Center Needs Volunteers

The Toccoa-Stephens County Literacy Center is in need of volunteer tutors.

Toccoa-Stephens County Literacy Center Manager Billie Thompson said tutors are needed for specific areas.

“We are desperately in need of volunteer tutors, especially in the area of reading and computer instruction for adult learners,” said Thompson.

Thompson said that she would be happy to meet with any potential volunteers and that working with the students can be rewarding.

“We have quite a few adults that come in and as you know, seniors are sort of leery about using computers and computer technology so we really need someone who can come out and work with them,” said Thompson. “We also have some special needs students who are needing help.”

Thompson encourages retired teachers or former tutors to help.

Hours for the learning center on South Broad Street in Toccoa are from 8 a.m. to noon on Monday through Thursday.

If you would like to volunteer or take classes to become a literacy volunteer, call Thompson at 706-282-5171.
