Man Charged Under Gang Statute in Toccoa

A Toccoa man faces drug and other charges after a search warrant and investigation in Toccoa.

According to Toccoa Police Chief Tim Jarrell, suspicion of drug activity that police uncovered through another investigation the department was working led officers to a Poplar Street residence.

Jarrell said that on February 9, police executed a search warrant at the home on the 600 block of Poplar Street.

He said that search uncovered suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia.

“We were able to recover a powdery substance believed to be cocaine and a rock-like substance believed to be crack cocaine,” said Jarrell, who added other items were found.

Jarrell said that police also located two handguns at the residence in addition to the suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia.

As a result of the search warrant, police arrested 49-year-old Barry Dean Daniels of the Poplar Street residence.

He is charged with two counts of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Distribute.

Also, Jarrell said Daniels faces two separate counts of Participating in a Criminal Street Gang in connection with this investigation.

“We have reason to believe the sale and distribution of the drugs is linked to suspected drug activity,” said Jarrell.

Jarrell said that the police department is still investigating the specific nature of the suspected gang activity.

At last report, Daniels remained in the Stephens County Jail.
