March of Dimes 5K Set for Saturday

A run this weekend in Stephens County will benefit the March of Dimes.

The March of Dimes for Stephens County and Franklin County is hosting the “Superhero 5K Run/Walk” on Saturday.

This is the organization’s annual local fundraiser for the March of Dimes.

Leon Womack is with the local March of Dimes.

He said there will be the 5k and a host of other activities.

“We have free popcorn, free Sno-cones, which I am waiting on myself,” said Womack. “Also, Domino’s is donating 50 pizzas. It is just going to be a great day. Plus, we are going to have a bouncy house.”

In addition, the race will be a qualifier for the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta.

As for the “superhero” theme, Womack encouraged people coming out to run or walk to dress up.

“If you want to dress up like a superhero, you can,” said Womack. “Understand there are going to be some superheroes out there, like Batman.”

Registration for the 5k begins at 9 a.m. and it begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Boyd Field behind Toccoa Elementary School in downtown Toccoa.

It costs $30 to register with proceeds benefiting the March of Dimes.

The mission of the March of Dimes nationwide is to improve the health of babies, specifically targeting pre-mature births.

Womack said he hopes everyone will come out and support a good cause.

“It is going to be a great day,” said Womack. “If you want to come out and enjoy something that is going to be special in Stephens County, this is what you need to come out for because when premature babies are born, they have to fight to live. We have to fight to help them live.”

People can also register for the race online at www.active.com, then searching for “Superhero, Toccoa, Ga.”
