Martin Looking Forward to 2017

Stephens County Development Authority Executive Director Tim Martin said that he is looking forward to the year ahead.

Martin delivered his semi-annual report to Stephens County Commissioners on Tuesday.

In that report, Martin called 2016 a “strongish” year.

He said while it was not fantastic, it was not bad, as the county added almost 300 jobs.

Martin went on to say that it feels like the county is finally recovered from much of the job loss that occurred during 2008 and 2009.

As far as 2017 goes, Martin said that there are companies considering Stephens County that could add a significant number of jobs to the county’s rolls.

“Project activity is strong,” said Martin. “We have some companies in the pipeline that if everything goes well, might have as many as 800 jobs announced in 2017.”

According to Martin, those jobs would be phased in over years if they came to fruition.

With that in mind, Martin said that the Development Authority is also focusing on workforce development in 2017.

He said that the Development Authority is working with employers, the school system, and North Georgia Technical College to try and make sure employers’ needs are being met as far as employee skills and abilities.

Stephens County Commission Chair Debbie Whitlock said she appreciates Martin’s efforts on behalf of the county.

“You have stuck with us through some times that were difficult and I, for one, appreciate that,” said Whitlock. “I am just glad you have hung in there and we get to see all the fruition of your work and anticipation.”

Other county commissioners also said they appreciate Martin’s efforts for the city and county.
