Memorial Day Observance at Camp Toccoa Today

There will be a Memorial Day Observance at the pavilion at Camp Toccoa today, beginning at 11 a.m.

This year’s theme is World War I and the Battle of Argonne to honor the 100th anniversary of WWI.

Veterans Service Coordinator Rick Hack said that they try to theme the observance each year for a group, however, the observance is for all who have lost their lives serving the military.

Hack will provide some welcoming words at the start of the event and to follow, Paige Dooley will be the keynote speaker. Dooley will be talking about events that occurred in World War I.

They will also be folding the U.S. flag and explaining the 13-folds and its significance. Hack says there will also be a memorial table.

“We’ll also have a memorial table for all our lost veterans,” said Hack. “It’s a table that memorializes the lost sailor, airmen, marine and coast guard men, showing that we’ll never forget them.”

For attendees who wish to place a wreath in remembrance of a loved one, you are invited to do so. You can place your wreath and Hack will then recognize everyone and have a special prayer and piece of music. Those who plan to bring a wreath are asked to arrive by 10:15 a.m.

Hack encouraged everyone to come out to the observance.

“We’d like you to come to honor those that have been lost in the time of war,” said Hack. “We also are at Camp Toccoa because so many of our military trained up there and we just thought it was fitting to hold our service there because we’re all Band of Brothers, no matter what service we’re in.”

There will be handicap assistance available. And again, the observance begins at 11 a.m. at the pavilion at Camp Toccoa.
