Mitchell is Active Senior of Year

WNEG names its Active Senior of the Year.

We handed out the annual award during our Senior Expo, which was held Thursday at the Stephens County Recreation Complex on Rose Lane.

This year’s Active Senior of the Year is Martha Mitchell.

She said she was shocked to win the award.

“I am totally surprised and do not feel that I deserve it,” said Mitchell. “When my daughter picked me up, because of the articles I write in the paper, I thought I was going to my execution. It was a total shock. Never dreamed of this, never.”

Mitchell is involved in a host of activities.

Those include having served as a President of Toccoa Pilot Club and Lieutenant Governor of Northeast Region for Pilot, leading Bible Study at the Clary Center, serving as a Sunday School teacher and Preschool Choir Accompanist at First Baptist Church of Toccoa, serving as a Board Member for Camp Toccoa at Currahee and as Treasurer for Friends of the Library.

Mitchell is also a member of the Literary Club, First Baptist Church Book Club, two bridge clubs, a member of the Historical Society, a volunteer at the Currahee Military Museum, and a teacher of piano lessons out of her home.

She said she enjoys doing everything that she does.

“I enjoy reading,” said Mitchell. “I read all the time. I love history, I love mystery. I am not fond of romance, but the rest of it, I love. I enjoy all my work at the church. I enjoy my work at the museum. Love playing bridge and love writing for the paper and letting people know what I think whether they want to know it or not. I just enjoy getting up every day because there is something to get up for.”

We at WNEG thank everyone who attended or participated in this year’s Senior Expo.
