Municipal Qualifying Starts Today

Qualifying for municipal elections in Stephens County gets underway today.

Toccoa, Martin, and Avalon will all hold qualifying this week.

In Toccoa, candidates wishing to qualify for one of the three seats up for election this year should see Toccoa City Clerk Fredda Wheeler at Toccoa City Hall.

Toccoa qualifying starts at 8:30 a.m. today and runs through 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The qualifying fee is $252 and the three seats up for election this year are those held by Terry Carter, Gail Fry, and David Austin.

All three incumbents have stated they will run for election.

Meanwhile, in Martin, qualifying will also run from 8:30 a.m. today to 4:30 p.m. Friday for the mayor’s seat and two council member seats.

The qualifying fee for mayor is $120 and the qualifying fee for council member is $90.

Candidates wishing to qualify for the Martin municipal election should qualify at the Stephens County Probate and Registrar’s Office, located in Room 108 downstairs in the Stephens County Government Building in downtown Toccoa.

Finally, Avalon municipal qualifying is taking place this week for Posts 1, 3, and 5 on the Avalon City Commission, according to a legal notice in the Toccoa Record.

That legal notice states the qualifying fee is $43.20 for Posts 1 and 3 and $50.40 for Post 5.

According to the legal notice, qualifying for Avalon will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today through Wednesday, with a one-hour lunch break between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., with Elections Superintendent Roger Craven at 15 Avalon Road.
