National Fire Protection Association Urging Grillers to be careful this summer

With summer now underway, barbecue season is in its peak and the National Fire Protection Association urges grillers to be careful while cooking on their grill.

According to the NFPA, grilling fires occur most often in the summer, particularly in the month of July.  Their latest Home Grill Fires report says that three out of five households own a gas grill, putting homes at risk for home fires.

The NFPA reports that gas grills cause more home fires than charcoal grills but they remind everyone that all types of grills create a risk for fires and burn injuries.

Toccoa Fire Chief Tommy Ayers said that he hasn’t dealt with grill fires, but shares some tips on how to avoid them.

“The main thing is when you’re using charcoal on a wooden deck, an animal may smell that food and rare up on it and knock it over and set the deck on fire,” said Ayers. “If you’re using gas, just make sure everything’s in working order.”

The NFPA adds to those tips saying to be sure that you keep your grill clean by removing grease and fat buildup from the grates and also to never leave your grill unattended.
