Next Downtown Toccoa Streetscape Phase to Start in February

Construction of the next phase of downtown Toccoa’s Streetscape plans are expected to begin in the next few weeks.

This latest Streetscape effort will involve the alleyway adjacent to WNEG Radio between Alexander Street and Sage Street, as well as the parking lot adjacent to that alleyway that backs up to the radio station and the Department of Labor.

Toccoa Main Street and Community Development Director Connie Tabor said this latest phase of the Streetscape project is slated to start in February.

“Phase Six of Streetscape will begin, we hope, on February 13,” said Tabor. “Martin Construction has been awarded the bid for the project. It is a federally funded project, as well as state, so there is a fair amount of paperwork that goes along with the project itself.”

She went on to say that once crews begin the work, they have 150 days in order to complete it.

“In that time period, there will be demolition and there will be concrete put back, brick pavers, new asphalt, as well as some new landscaping in the parking lot,” said Tabor. “We are looking forward to the finished project. It will look similar to the other alleys in the adjoining streets.”

The total project cost was last estimated at $352,569.

Toccoa City Commissioners approved the project in 2012 and received $282,055 in Georgia DOT funds to help pay for the project. Meanwhile, the city put up a 20 percent match on the project of $70,514.

Some of the city’s matching funds have already been spent on the project and the rest of the matching funds are in the city’s budget to cover the cost.
