One Killed in Franklin Co. Accident

A Hartwell man is dead after a two-vehicle accident in Franklin County over the weekend.

The accident occurred at about 9:45 a.m. Sunday on Georgia Highway 17 at its intersection with Lankford Road, which is just south of the city of Lavonia.

According to Sergeant Al Whitworth of the Hartwell post of the Georgia State Patrol, an 18-wheeler driven by 51-year-old David Whitfield of Eastanollee was headed south on Highway 17 when he entered the center lane to turn left onto Lankford Road.

Meanwhile, Whitworth said that a Ford Explorer driven by 43-year-old Michael Alexander of Hartwell entered the center lane and struck the 18 wheeler head on.

Alexander was pronounced dead on the scene.

Whitfield was not injured.
