The Pond Street Bridge in downtown Toccoa is open once again.

Toccoa City Manager Billy Morse announced that the bridge was back open to traffic as of Friday morning.

Morse said the bridge is also in the process of getting signage for its new five-ton rating.

The bridge over the railroad tracks through downtown Toccoa had been closed since April 3 when the city of Toccoa received notification from the Georgia Department of Transportation to close the bridge.

Georgia DOT bridge inspectors said they had found a problem with one of the bridge’s wooden supports.

Norfolk Southern Railroad, which owns and operates the railroad tracks over which the bridge goes, had agreed to fix the support last week.

Last week, crews were out fixing the support in order to get the bridge back open.

The repairs did not cost the city of Toccoa any money.
