Prayer Vigil To Be Held This Month

A prayer vigil is being organized for later this month to pray for the community and the nation in light of recent events across America.

The vigil will take place on Thursday, July 28 at 7 p.m. on Sage Street in downtown Toccoa, between the historic Stephens County Courthouse and the antique market.

Stephens County Commission Chairman Dennis Bell called for the event on Tuesday.

“We need to come together as one and love one another instead of spreading hate out here,” said Bell. “The last few days, I have seen a lot of that. We lost five good people in Texas and it is sad when it comes down to that. I do want you all to remember our country. We have got to come together. You cannot fight hate with hate. I believe Dr. Martin Luther King, in one of his phrases, said the only way to overcome hate is with love and Dr. Martin Luther King is one of the greatest leaders we have ever had.”

Bell is also the President of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia.

He said he visited Atlanta, site of some protests, this week in that role to visit with officers working and tell them the association supports them.
