School Calendar Discussions Underway in Stephens Co.

The Stephens County School System is looking at a couple of different calendar options for the 2016-2017 school year that have no furlough days for teachers and employees.

Stephens County School Superintendent Bryan Dorsey presented the Board of Education with two different calendar proposals at Thursday’s Board of Education work session.

Both of the calendars contained a full allotment of 180 days and no furlough days for teachers and employees in the Stephens County school system for next year.

Each of the calendars would call for school to start for the 2016-2017 school year on August 4 for students and end on May 19, 2017 for students.

The only difference between the two calendars comes in the Fall.

One of the draft calendars gives only a teacher work day on October 7 and a full week off for Thanksgiving.

The other draft calendar, however, has a teacher work day for October 5 and a Fall Break for October 6 and 7, with only three days off for the Thanksgiving holiday.

At Thursday’s work session, Dorsey told the school board that to have both a Fall Break and a week off for Thanksgiving would likely require an earlier start date.

Both calendars remain under discussion and no vote is expected to be taken on the calendars at tonight’s Board of Education meeting.
