SCHS Splits Basketball Games at Elbert

The Stephens County High School basketball teams get a split on a visit to the Inferno.

Stephens County visited Elbert County Saturday in non-region basketball action.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Indians used a strong second quarter to build a lead it would not relinquish in defeating the Lady Devils 48-29.

Leading 13-8 after the first quarter, Stephens County outscored Elbert County 19-8 in the second quarter to take a 16-point halftime lead.

Audresha Merritt had 14 points to lead the Lady Indians, who again had nine different players score.

Jimera Hill and Tanisha Fortson each had seven points for Elbert County.

Moving to the boys’ game, Stephens County led early for the second straight night, but again fell behind in the second quarter in falling to Elbert County 75-56.

The Blue Devils outscored the Indians 26-14 in the second quarter to take an 11-point halftime lead. 

Stephens County cut the lead under single digits in the third, but Elbert pulled away late.

Josh Slate led the Indians with 12 points, while Tay Jones had 11 points and Tyrik Combs added 10 points.

Montavious Tinch led Elbert with 25 points, while Tyricus Huff added 18 points and Tarveil Fortson added 11 points.

The Lady Indians are now 10-7 on the season and the Indian boys are 2-15.

Stephens County is off until Friday when they visit Walnut Grove.  Air time Friday is 6:15 p.m. and tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. on AM 630 WNEG and wnegradio.com.
