SCHS Sweeps Oconee On Road in Region Basketball

The Stephens County Indians and Lady Indians went on the road to Watkinsville and swept Oconee County Tuesday night in varsity basketball action.

The Lady Indians picked up their second region victory and their second win over the Oconee County Lady Warriors this season with a close 58-55 victory.

The Lady Indians trailed by eight points at halftime and by three at the end of the third period, but finally took the lead with about 6 minutes to go in the game. With the lead changing several times in the final period, Stephens County sank 15 out of 22 free throws to help seal the win.

Stephens County’s Tykia Thompson led all scorers with 21 points, followed by Kaitlyn Phillips with 15 and LiLi Walker with 12.

The Lady Indians improve to 3-18 overall and 2-5 in Region 8-AAAA while Oconee County drops to 7-14 overall and 0-7 in the Region.

The varsity boys’ game was also very close as Stephens County led by six at halftime, but Oconee County took the lead back in the third period.

The Indians were able to keep it close led by AJ Curry’s 11 second half points, but it was De’Undre Singleton’s catch of a deflected pass and score with less than four seconds to play that provided the winning points for the Indians in the 74-72 victory.

Singleton led Stephens County with 19 points followed by Curry with 15 and Ty Nails with 11.

The Indians improved to 14-6 overall and 3-4 in Region 8-AAAA. Oconee County falls to 11-9 overall and 3-4 in the region.

The Indians and Lady Indians will be back in action Friday night as they travel down to Danielsville to play Madison County. Varsity girls will tip-off at 7 pm—airtime on WNEG will be 6:45.
