SCSO Arrests Two Franklin Co. Men on Drug Charges

Two Franklin County men face drug charges in Stephens County.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley says that deputies with his office’s Crime Suppression Unit performed a traffic stop on a vehicle recently due to minor traffic violations on Big A Road.

Shirley says deputies requested the driver produce his license, but the driver told deputies that he did not have his license and instead provided deputies his name and date of birth.

The sheriff says deputies ran the name given by the driver, Todd Michael Cavanaugh, and information indicated that his license was suspended.

Sheriff Shirley says that while speaking with the vehicle’s occupants, deputies noticed what appeared to be methamphetamine lying on the floor board of the vehicle.

At that point, deputies seized the suspected drugs.

The sheriff says the crystal like substance was “field tested” by placing a small sample of the substance into a GBI crime lab approved test kit and the test kit indicated the presence of methamphetamines.

At that point, the 26-year-old Cavanaugh, who lives in Carnesville, was arrested and charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, Driving While License Suspended, Driving Under the Influence, Tail light Requirements, and Failure to Maintain Lane.

Cavanaugh was taken to the Stephens County Jail and bond was set at $19,500.

Meanwhile, Cavanaugh’s passenger, 57-year-old Gary Michael Tester of Lavonia, was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine.

Tester was taken to the Stephens County Jail and bond was set at $5,000.

Shirley says the suspected methamphetamine that was seized will be sent to the GBI Crime Lab to be positively identified.
