Sheriff Offers Holiday Safety Tips

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley is offering some last minute holiday safety advice for area residents.

Shirley said he wants everybody to have a safe and happy holiday.

He said when shopping, people should park in a well-lit area and pay attention to surroundings.

“Try to get yourself a parking space as close to the mall area as you are going into and look for folks that may just be standing around,” said Shirley. “I would not get out of the car if someone were standing around if I were by myself. In fact, I would encourage you, if you are going to a mall out of town, to go with friends and stay together.”

Shirley said that anyone who feels uncertain or unsafe about a certain situation or area should move to a safer spot.

He went on to say that once in a safe location, people should move quickly to the store or wherever they are going.

The sheriff said would-be thieves and robbers are looking for the easiest targets.

Shirley also reminded people to secure their vehicles in the parking lot.

“If you have any valuables that are in the car, such as a GPS, lock it in a glove box or a trunk,” said Shirley. “Do not leave it out where they can see us.”

Shirley said if leaving late from a store, people should not hesitate to ask for help from a store employee and be alert when returning to the vehicle.

He said that in general, awareness is a person’s best defense.

“Always remember that,” said Shirley. “You can’t trust folks anymore in this day and time. If something does not seem right, do not take a kind gesture. Just keep moving. We want you to be as safe as you can.”

Shirley also encouraged people traveling over the holiday to buckle up, carry a cell phone and charger, and obey the posted speed limits and other traffic laws.
