Sidewalk Work Underway in Lavonia

The city of Lavonia continues to work on its sidewalk streetscape project.

There have been road cones and workers throughout the downtown area of Lavonia this past week.

Lavonia City Manager Charles Cawthon said it is for a project that started back in 2012.

“This is the continuation of the T-project,” said Cawthon. “This is basically a rip-up and replace of old, deteriorating sidewalks. It is pretty much going to be the heart of the downtown area.”

According to Cawthon, the new sidewalks will be a benefit to all who walk in downtown Lavonia, and even more so to those who need something handicap-accessible.

“It is going to make the intersections ADA-accessible for somebody in a wheelchair or walking-impaired,” said Cawthon. “They will be able to access those interchanges or those sections (of sidewalk).”

Cawthon said the work will affect multiple areas in downtown Lavonia.

“Basically affected is Jones Street Extension, Grogan Street, West Main Street up against the buildings, and down on West Avenue,” said Cawthon.

He went on to say that the project that is several years in the making is being funded mostly by grant monies.

“The funding was there and then it was not,” said Cawthon. “It is roughly $250,000. $200,000 is from GDOT.”

Cawthon said he expects the project to take around two months to complete.
