INDIANS GET READY FOR BASEBALL PLAYOFFS
May 5, 2008

The Stephens County Indians’ baseball team is preparing this week for the upcoming state AAA baseball playoffs. First, they face the Sandy Creek Patriots this weekend here at the Reservation in Toccoa.

"We are going to go back and start fundamentals all over again," says Gosnell. "We have got a week to prepare and try to get ourselves ready for a run here in the state playoffs. Sandy Creek is very good, very talented, and very athletic. We probably got one of the toughest draws we could get in the first round, so we have got our work cut out for us, that is for sure."

The first round match-up between Stephens County and Sandy Creek begins this Friday, May 9. You can hear the Friday double header here on AM 630 WNEG beginning at 4:45 p.m. The first pitch in Game 1 at the Reservation is set for 5 p.m.

INDIANS WIN ANOTHER REGION 8-AAA GAME
April 9, 2008

An offensive explosion paves the way for another Stephens County win in Region 8-AAA baseball. Sixteen runs in five innings gave the Indians a 16-5 win over Apalachee in a make-up game Tuesday night. The game was a make-up from a rain-out back on April 4. The Indians broke open a 5-4 game in the third inning, when they plated six runs. In that inning, the Indians sent ten men to the plate. Five straight Indians reached base to lead off the inning. Stephens County mostly used small ball to score their six runs in that inning, getting three singles and two walks as opposed to one-extra base hit.

Two more runs in the fourth extended the lead and Stephens County wrapped it up in the fifth inning, adding three to their tally while holding Apalachee scoreless after they loaded the bases with one out to invoke the ten-run rule. Zach Powell started for the Indians and picked up the victory.

The Indians are now 14-3 overall and 9-1 in Region 8-AAA, maintaining their hold on first place.

ANOTHER LATE RALLY PUTS INDIAN BASEBALL BACK IN FIRST PLACE
April 8, 2008

Senior Blake Pruitt became the Stephens County Indians’ hero for the second game in a row Monday.

Following last Wednesday’s grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to bring the Indians a win, Pruitt drove in two runs in the bottom half of the seventh Monday night to give the Indians a come-from-behind win over the Oconee County Warriors, 4-3.

Starting Oconee County pitcher John Newsome tripled in two runs in the third inning then scored while the Indians fumbled the ball in the infield. The Indians countered with two runs in the bottom of the third on Blake Pruitt’s RBI single and a bases-loaded walk to Blake Day.

Chan Cash singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Ethan Martin moved the runner to second on a ground out and Cody Martin was intentionally walked, setting the stage again for Pruitt.

Many thought Pruitt’s ball was hit over the fence and bounced back in. The ball was not ruled a home run and two runs scored with Cody Martin scoring the winning run as the throw from center field got away from catcher Jay Harrison.

Ethan Martin pitched a complete game, giving up three hits and striking out thirteen for the win. John Newsome started for Oconee County and struck out eight before being relieved by Derek Varnadore, who took the loss.

The win gives the Indians a 13-3 record and 8-1 in Region 8-AAA. Oconee County suffers only its second loss. They are 11-2 and 6-2 in region play and both losses have come to the Indians.

The Indians begin a two-game road trip this evening traveling to Apalachee in a make-up of last Friday’s rainout. Game time is 5:30 p.m. and air time on AM 630 WNEG is 5:20 p.m.

Matt Miller was hired this week and approved by the Stephens County Board of Education to teach at the middle school and take over as their head football coach.

Principal Tony Crunkleton says they are glad to have Miller take the reins.

"We knew him personally," says Crunkleton. "We knew what type of person he was. He would be a good fit for our middle school and for our students here and he did have high school experience because we wanted to make sure that the person knew football and I think he will work well both with our other coaches here and with the high school staff."

Miller has been an assistant coach at Franklin County High School for the past few years.
