SCHS Sweeps Hart in Non-Region Hoops

The Stephens County High School basketball teams complete a weekend varsity sweep with wins over Hart County.

Saturday, The Indians and Lady Indians registered wins at the Currahee Arena in a non-region match-up with the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs.

In the girls’ game, Shauna Butler scored 18 points for the second night in a row, leading her team to a 50-39 win over the Hart County girls. Charity Major and Tatyana Beasley had 9 points each. Shara Oliver led the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points.

The Stephens County girls are now 14-9 for the season

Cody Helgeland’s 15 points and Antonio Jackson’s 13 points led the Stephens County boys to a 56-47 win in the boys’ game. Trey Gaines had 18 points to lead Hart County. Darren Craft chipped in with 14 points.

The Stephens County boys are now 14-10 overall.

Stephens County has one more regular season game left on the schedule. The number one seeded North Hall Trojans visit the Currahee Arena Tuesday evening. The outcome of that game plus other sub-region games will determine the seedings for the Region 8-AAA Tournament. Game time Tuesday evening is 6 p.m. and airtime on AM 630 WNEG and wnegradio.com will be 5:45 p.m. 

SCHS Beats White in Region Basketball Games At Currahee Arena

Both the Stephens County Indians and Lady Indians got off to slow starts in the first half last night ,but came back to beat their White County opponents.

Trailing by four at the half, the Stephens County Lady Indians outscored the Lady Warriors of White County by 23-11, en route to a close 41-37 win at the Currahee Arena. Senior Shauna Butler led all scorers with 18 points. Charity Major helped out with 10 points. Riley Slaton led White County’s girls with 10 points.

The win gives the Lady Indians a 13-9 record and a 6-3 sub-region slate.

The Stephens County boys trailed the White County boys by 10 at the half of their game.  But the second half belonged to the Indians, who went on to a 50-37 win. Stephens County outscored the Warriors 39-16 in the second half. White County only got two free throws in the third period while the Indians poured in 23 points.  Antonio Jackson led the Indians with 12 points, followed by Cody Helgeland with 11 and Stephen Hunter with 10.

Stephens County is now 13-10 and 6-3 in the sub-region.

The Indians and Lady Indians play a non-region game this afternoon at 4 p.m. against Hart County. Air time on WNEG Radio and wnegradio.com will be 3:45 p.m.

SCHS Sweeps Lumpkin Co. in Varsity Basketball

Stephens County sweeps Lumpkin County in sub-region basketball play in Dahlonega.

In the girls’ game Tuesday, the Lady Indians led at the end of each period on the way to a 46-41 win over Lumpkin County.

Charity Major had 18 points to lead the Lady Indians and Shauna Butler had 14 points.

Dakota Sullens, who had 18 points, led Lumpkin County.

The Lady Indians are now 12-9 overall and 5-3 in the sub-region. They sit tied for second place in the sub-region with White County, who upset first-place North Hall Tuesday.

Meanwhile, in the boys’ game, Stephens County jumped out by ten in the first period and went on to win Tuesday over Lumpkin County 65-53.

Four Indians scored in double figures.

Cody Hegeland had 18 points and Kamichi Fleming had 12. Also, Stephen Hunter had 11 points and Drique Holden added 10 points for the Indians.

Dveonte Anderson had 12 points to lead Lumpkin County and Kelvin Williams added 10.

The Indians are now 12-10 overall and 5-3 in the sub-region.

Stephens County is back home on Friday night for a sub-region clash with White County.

The varsity girls’ game Friday will tip off at 7 p.m. at the Currahee Arena, with the boys’ game to follow.

Air time on AM 630 WNEG and wnegradio.com is set for 6:45 p.m. 

SCHS Wrestling Update

Stephens County’s wrestling team will host Rabun County in a dual match tonight at the Renovated "Indian Gym" under the spotlight.

Senior recognition ceremonies will begin around 5:30 preceding the match.  

SCHS and SCMS Basketball Update

The Stephens County Indian and Lady Indian basketball teams return to action tonight in Dahlonega against Lumpkin County.

On Saturday, the Indian boys hosted Riverside in a non-region game, winning 52-40.

The Stephens County boys are now 11-10 overall.

Tip-off for the varsity girls’ game tonight is 6 p.m. with the varsity boys’ game to follow.

Air time on AM 630 WNEG is set for 5:45 p.m.

Meanwhile, in middle school basketball, the 7th grade Stephens County Middle School boys lost to Madison County this past Saturday in the semi-finals of the conference tournament by a 44-19 score.

Malik Feaster led the Rebels with 6 points. Quinton Mayfield had 5 and AJ Howard had 4.

The 7th grade Rebel boys finished the season with 7 wins and 7 losses.
