Spring Football Practice Underway

Spring practice is underway for the Stephens County High School and Middle School football teams.

Varsity spring practice started last Thursday and continues this week and next week.

Stephens County High School Head Football Coach Frank Barden said things are going well so far.

“We started last week with our varsity players,” said Barden. “They were ready to get out there after a good, long winter of working in the weight room, so there has been a lot of excitement with them and they were ready to go.”

The varsity team is practicing on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Meanwhile, middle schoolers are practicing on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.

Barden said he is glad to have spring practice back after cancelling it for a second scrimmage in the Fall last year.

“I love having spring practice,” said Barden. “I love having a chance to get out on the field and coach the young kids, coach the fundamentals of the game. It also ends the school year and starts the mindset of football season going into the summer and getting ready for August. I think it is a very important time for us.”

According to Barden, spring practice will end with some sort of scrimmage on May 14.

Meanwhile, starting next year, the Georgia High School Association will allow schools to scrimmage each other in the Spring.

Barden said that is a good move that he is looking forward to in 2017.

“It is much more advantageous to have a scrimmage in the Spring and one in the Fall, rather than two in the Fall,” said Barden.

As for this year, Barden said more details will be released on the May 14 spring scrimmage event in the coming days.
