SR 184 Bridge Over Toccoa Creek Back Open

Drivers who use Prather Bridge Road, or State Route 184, are no longer using a detour to get around the bridge over Toccoa Creek.

That bridge re-opened to traffic on Saturday afternoon.

Georgia Department of Transportation Spokesperson Katie Strickland said it is not the end of the project, but it is a huge step forward.

“It is not a complete project yet,” said Strickland. “There are several things that have to be done, but we did open the bridge earlier than expected.”

She said they have moved quicker than expected.

“We had some good weather in the Fall, so it is done early, open early, which is a big win, I know, for Stephens County residents,” said Strickland.

According to Strickland, work that remains can be done with traffic control so both lanes of the bridge do not have to be closed.

Drivers should still use caution when traveling in that area as crews complete the project.

The bridge had been closed since July.

While the bridge was shut off to traffic, the DOT had drivers taking a detour route around the bridge that involved Highview Road, Old Rothell Road, and Camp Mikell Road.

The bridge that has been replaced was a 76-year-old bridge over Toccoa Creek.

Baldwin Paving of Marietta was awarded the project with a low bid of $2.3 million.
