Stephens Co. Approves Bids for Fire Station Buildings

Stephens County is also putting everything in place to move forward with construction on three new volunteer fire department stations in the county.

Tuesday, county commissioners unanimously approved motions to award the plumbing contract and the construction of the fire station buildings and concrete flooring.

Haygood Plumbing and Associate, Inc. received the plumbing contract at a cost of $6,100 per fire department and Tom Adams Construction received the building and flooring contract at a cost of $68,218 per fire department.

County Administrator Phyllis Ayers said that the county is already making good progress on one of the fire department sub-stations that is going to be built.

“The one that is ready to go, that is graded, is the North Holcomb fire site,” said Ayers, who added they are already working on water lines with the city.

Meanwhile, Ayers said the county is working to get everything finalized with the other two station sites.

According to Ayers, one site near the Currahee Club and the other is in the Black Mountain area.

The North Holcomb and Red Bluff stations will be part of the Big Smith Fire Department, while the Black Mountain station will be part of the Shiloh Fire Department.

There is no set date for finishing all three buildings.

Ayers said because of that, these bids may have to be adjusted in the future depending on how long everything takes.

“If we are too far behind and there is a price increase, we may have to go back to the drawing board on station number three,” said Ayers.

SPLOST VI money is paying for the new station buildings that are designed to help improve fire department coverage in the county and help lower ISO ratings for some people in Stephens County.
