Stephens Co., Carrollton Face Off in Playoffs Tonight

The Stephens County Indian football team begins its playoff journey tonight.

The Indians will make the trip across the state to face Carrollton in the first round of the AAAA state football playoffs.

Stephens County is 8-2 on the season and finished the regular season as the third seed out of Region 8-AAAA with a 5-2 region record. The Indians are coming off of a 42-3 win last week over Lumpkin County.

Carrollton enters the game with a 7-3 record overall. The Trojans finished the regular season as the second seed out of Region 5-AAAA with a 6-1 region record. Last week, Carrollton defeated LaGrange 41-14.

These two teams have met three times previously, all in the playoffs. The last time they met in 2010, Carrollton defeated Stephens County 63-20 in Carrollton in the first round of the AAA playoffs.

Carrollton also knocked Stephens County out of the postseason in 2006 in the second round by a 24-13 score. The Indians got the better of the Trojans in the first round back in 1992 by a score of 7-6.

Stephens County Offensive Line Coach Brian Johnson said the Indians are excited to go play a fast, athletic Carrollton team.

“They have both of those (speed and athleticism),” said Johnson. “They do a good job coaching. Their kids play hard and play good technique. My mom and dad are both from Carrollton. I have been watching Carrollton since I was old enough to watch a game. They do a tremendous job and we are going to have to play our best game to go down there and fight.”

Kick-off from Carrollton is set for 7:30 p.m.

Coverage begins at 6 p.m. on AM 630 WNEG with Tommy Palmer’s Countdown to Kick-off. Coach’s Corner starts at 7 p.m. with pre-game coverage starting at 7:15 p.m.

The winner of tonight’s Stephens County/Carrollton game will take on the winner of the first-round game between Marist and Gilmer.

In other AAAA playoff action tonight involving Region 8, champion Monroe Area will host Shaw, region runner-up Chestatee will host LaGrange, and the region’s fourth-place team Eastside will travel to Sandy Creek.

In other Northeast Georgia playoff action, Hart County travels to Adairsville in the first round of the AAA playoffs and Rabun County will travel to Heard County in the first round of the AA playoffs.
