Stephens Co. Commission Approve Bids for Road Work

Stephens County is ready to move forward with miles of street re-surfacing.

On Tuesday, the Stephens County Commission unanimously voted to award two bids for street re-surfacing to C.W. Matthews, Inc.

One bid is for $1,575,608.61 and includes just over 20 miles in roads, while the other bid is for $172,257.20 for the re-surfacing of Memorial Drive between the Toccoa By-pass and Big A Road, along with Sorrells Road.

Stephens County Commission Vice-Chair Dean Scarborough says it is exciting to finally have everything in place to begin working on numerous roads throughout the county.

“We had hoped to have it started before now but because of different reasons, personnel changes, it has taken us a little longer to get the bids out,” said Scarborough.

Roads included in that 20-some miles to be re-surfaced include New Hope Road, Freeman Creek Road, Tower Road, Yonah Dam Road, East Silver Shoals Road, Rumsey Road, and Bruce Road.

As for Memorial Drive and Sorrells Road, Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers said plans are in place to work around school traffic on those roads by doing that road work at night after school lets out and not before 5 p.m.

Ayers said a pre-construction meeting will take place in the coming days with C.W. Matthews and work will begin likely within 10 days or so after that pre-construction meeting.

There is no word on exactly how long the work will take or what order the work will be done in at this point.

Stephens County Commissioners approved the issuing of bonds to forward fund the road work and the bonds will be paid back with money collected for roads and bridges through SPLOST VI.
