Stephens Co. Commission Approves Re-Zoning Request

Stephens County approves a re-zoning request for a local property.

Tuesday, the county commission unanimously approved a re-zoning request from Dwayne Smith on Leatherwood Road.

Smith wanted his property re-zoned from Residential Single Family to Agriculture General/Residential in order to allow farming and a possible nursery on the property.

According to Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers, this particular property sits in a mixed use area where there are lots of different types of residential and agricultural properties.

“This is one particular parcel that could have gone either way,” said Ayers.

Smith said he just wants to start a farm on the property now that he has retired.

Prior to coming before the county commission, the Stephens County Planning Commission had also recommended approving the re-zoning request.

On another land use-related note, Stephens County will be making a larger sign to post on properties that are requesting land use changes before the Planning Commission.

Ayers said that the county has received numerous complaints that the current sign is too small and is not easily seen.

The signs are put up on properties that have requested changes like re-zoning that must come before the Planning Commission to help notify neighboring properties of the request.
